The Purple Way of
Biofouling Control
Clorel® Onsite Seawater ElectroChlorination Technology’s signature purple is more than a color – it represents engineering precision, long-term performance, and innovation shaping the future of the marine applications.
Next-Generation Biofouling Control
The most critical factor for achieving 100% biofouling control is continuous chlorine dosing which not only eliminates existing biofouling but also prevents the re-formation. And, the most efficient way to ensure uninterrupted dosing is through on-site chlorine generation.
Produce Your Own Chlorine in Your Own Place!
Clorel® is reliable Seawater ElectroChlorination technology that allows you to produce and dose your own chlorine (NaOCl) in your own place. Onsite production means not only continuous dosing, but also constant defense against biofouling!
Clorel needs only Seawater and Electricity.
Imagine having your own chlorine using nothing more than seawater. Forget about the need for large shipments of commercial chemicals, the hassles of handling and storage. Clorel® produces Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) simply by electrolyzing seawater.
Clorel® is designed to produce at the point of consumption.
Since Clorel® produces low-concentration chlorine suitable only for on-site consumption and not for transportation, it is installed at the chlorine consumption point with all equipment and instruments.

Biofouling Control with 100% Success
Biofouling control doesn’t have to be complicated – it only requires uninterrupted dosing. With Clorel®, enjoy continuous protection, maximum efficiency, and zero chemical handling.

All-time Residual Chlorine
Prevent biofouling before it starts – not after it appears. Unlike uncontrolled shock dosing with commercial chemicals, onsite seawater electrochlorination ensures a stable and uninterrupted supply of residual chlorine, eliminating the risks of biological growth between treatment cycles.

24/7 Dosing is only Possible with Onsite ElectroChlorination
Onsite electrochlorination systems generate chlorine continuously, exactly where and when it’s needed – using only seawater and electricity. Unlike commercial chemicals, Clorel® eliminates the need for transport, storage, or handling. This enables precise, low-dose, uninterrupted chlorination, which is critical for preventing biofouling around the clock.

The Power of Periodical Shock Chlorination
Mussels, the main biofouling threat in seawater systems, can adapt to predictable shock chlorination by resisting chlorine doses or closing their shells. To counter this, Kemisan® PLC systems use an “obfuscatory calendar” that randomizes shock chlorination schedules, preventing adaptation and ensuring effective treatment.

No More Physical Cleaning
By preventing biofouling before it starts, onsite electrochlorination keeps equipment like heat exchangers, pipes, and filters clean – significantly reducing or even eliminating the need for physical or mechanical cleaning. Less fouling means less downtime, lower maintenance costs, and reduced manpower.

Huge Savings
in the Fight Against Biofouling
Clorel® not only significantly reduces your direct chemical costs, but also eliminates indirect operational costs such as reductions in production capacity, scheduled and unscheduled shutdowns for biofouling removal, energy and process-efficiency losses associated with biofouling accumulation.

Reduce Chemical OPEX by 85%
Cut biofouling costs by up to 85% – using only electricity and minimal Clorel® maintenance. No chemical purchases, no hidden expenses, just performance.

7% Increasing İGSAŞ Ammonia Production
After implementing continuous electro-chlorination, fouling was eliminated and cooling performance improved, which directly enhanced compressor efficiency. As a result, ammonia production capacity increased by about 7%.

Eliminate Flow Transfer Loses
Organisms reduce the fluid velocity by narrowing the inner diameter of the pipes or increasing surface roughness. This significantly increases the required pump pressure, which in turn raises energy consumption. As a result, pump efficiency can decrease by 5-15%, leading to a similar increase in operational costs.

Eliminate Heat Transfer Loses
A biofilm or layer of organisms insulates the heat transfer surface, reducing the heat transfer coefficient. In this case, the system tries to achieve the desired cooling by consuming more energy. Heat transfer loss in the condenser can reach up to 10-30%, which increases energy consumption by approximately the same proportion.

Eliminate Process Downtime Loss Due to Physical Cleaning
Reducing the need for physical cleaning means fewer shutdowns and less disruption to operations. Every hour of downtime avoided translates directly into increased productivity and reduced revenue loss. With continuous biofouling control via onsite electrochlorination, maintenance intervals are extended, emergency interventions are minimized, and equipment stays in service longer. The result: lower OPEX, higher availability, and better ROI.

Eliminate Microbiologics Corrosion
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) can reduce the service life of cooling system equipment by 30% to 50%. This leads to increased repair and replacement needs, as well as unplanned emergency maintenance shutdowns. Hourly downtime in the process can result in significant economic losses depending on the industry. According to reports from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), MIC can cause up to a 20% annual increase in maintenance and repair costs in cooling systems.

Biofouling Control with Marine Sustainability
Clorel® not only significantly reduces your direct chemical costs, but also eliminates indirect operational costs such as reductions in production capacity, scheduled and unscheduled shutdowns for biofouling removal, energy and process-efficiency losses associated with biofouling accumulation.

Biofouling Control Aligned with Blue Economy
On-site seawater electrochlorination aligns with the Blue Economy’s sustainable marine industry principles by eliminating chemical transport and reducing toxic impacts on coastal ecosystems through low-dose, continuous chlorination. Compared to traditional shock chlorination, it offers a more controlled, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly approach. This supports both operational efficiency and the protection of marine ecosystems in industrial cooling-water processes.

Marine Friendly Solution with Much Less DBPs
Marine ecosystems are highly sensitive to chemical imbalances. Conventional disinfectants, when discharged into seawater, can harm coral reefs, fish populations, and biodiversity. Comparative analyses have shown that while commercial NaOCl can lead to the formation of chlorate and perchlorate, on-site NaOCl generation from seawater results in up to 100 times less chlorate and does not produce perchlorate at all.

Get Controlled Dosing, No More Overdosed
Continuous, low-level chlorination eliminates the need for high-concentration overdosed shock dosing, which can be harmful to marine ecosystems. By maintaining stable and effective disinfection with onsite electrochlorination, you prevent biofouling without overexposing the environment to chemicals, and help to protect local marine life and biodiversity.

Prevent Over Dosing with Advanced Dosing Automation
You can adjust all dosing operations in a controlled manner through PLC. You can even schedule shock dosing at desired intervals with full control. This allows you to prevent both under-chlorination and over-chlorination.

GO ZERO CO2
According to global transport emissions in 2018, heavy-duty road transport was responsible for 30% of total CO2 emissions, amounting to 8 billion tonnes. With Clorel®, no Chlorine Shipments, no Transport-related Carbon Footprint! By generating chlorine onsite using only seawater and electricity, you eliminate totally carbon emissions of chemical transportation.
Transportation-Related Carbon Emissions for an Annual 100-Ton Chlorine Requirement
Chlorine Gas
9,5 ton CO2
Transporting chlorine gas may seem lighter than liquid NaOCl, but the empty cylinders must be sent back for refilling. This extra round-trip doubles the transportation-related carbon footprint. Onsite generation eliminates both delivery and return logistics, cutting emissions dramatically.
Commercial Sodium Hypochlorite
15,5 ton CO2
Liquid sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) typically contains only ~15% active chlorine – the rest is water. Transporting it means moving a huge amount of water, which dramatically increases carbon emissions. Onsite electrochlorination eliminates the need for chemical deliveries, cutting CO2 and logistics impact almost entirely.
Onsite Sodium Hypochlorite
0 kg CO2
Since Clorel® produces Sodium hypochlorite by using only seawater and electricity, there is no need any chemical purchasing. Thus, the carbon-emissions of the tonnes of chemicals transportation can be eliminated.

Safe Plant
Safe People
Seawater electrochlorination is widely regarded as a safer and more efficient alternative to the use of commercially purchased chlorine for biofouling control.
One of its key safety advantages lies in the elimination of hazardous chlorine gas storage and transportation, which are associated with significant risks of leaks, explosions, and toxic exposure. Instead, electrochlorination systems generate sodium hypochlorite on-site using only seawater and electricity, producing a low-concentration disinfectant solution that is far less dangerous to handle.
This greatly reduces the risk of accidents for operators and surrounding environments. Additionally, because the system operates in a closed loop and requires minimal chemical handling, it enhances workplace safety and regulatory compliance. These benefits make electrochlorination especially attractive in sensitive applications such as offshore platforms, power plants, and coastal desalination facilities.

Keep Safe Your Facility & Personnel
Unlike commercial chlorine, which are classified as hazardous, chlorine produced on-site from seawater is not considered dangerous according to EPA and WHO thanks ot its concentration less than 1%. As a result, it is exempt from many safety regulations, and not even require the use of gas masks during operation.

Keep Safe All Modes of Transportation
Clorel® is developed for on-site production and consumption as needed, completely eliminating the risks associated with transportation, handling, and storage of dangerous chemicals. And, you can keep safe not only your facility but also all roads & community.

Keep Safe the Entire City
In recent years, rapid population growth has pushed many coastal industrial facilities closer to urban centers. As a result, safety and environmental concerns have become more pressing — driving a shift toward safer chlorination methods. Today, these considerations aren’t just about protecting the facility itself, but also the people and ecosystems surrounding it.
